This way you can ban microplastics from your cosmetics from now on
Microplastics, what are they? Microplastics, as the name suggests, are tiny particles of plastic that end up in nature via plastic waste, but also via care products (via the shower drain) and cause permanent damage. We teach you how to recognize them on the label.
Why is there plastic in my care products?
In cosmetics, such as liquid makeup, eye shadow and lipstick, microplastics are added for thickness, appearance, stability of a product or simply as a cheap filler. This also applies to care products such as day cream, shower gel, toothpaste, sunscreen creams, shampoos and deodorant. In addition, microbeads, plastic granules that have an abrasive effect, are used in scrub products and various toothpastes. In 2016, the Netherlands was the first country to impose a ban on this, but it is still a major problem worldwide. Why?
Microplastics and microbeads can end up in nature through the shower drain, because they cannot be filtered out (because they are too small) and have harmful consequences for humans and animals. We don't want to, right?
Funny not so funny, even the most expensive creams are filled with microplastics.
How do you recognize microplastics on the label?
On the back of a product you will find the INCI, the ingredients list. Scan the list for names such as 'Poly...hoppeldepup, Acrylate, Nylon or Acetate and you know enough.
5 most common microplastics:
- Polyethylene
- Polystyrene/Acrylates copolymer
- Polypropylene
- Polyacrylate
- Polyquaternium
