What are silicones and why should you avoid them?
Silicones are an ingredient that you will often find in hair products. If you look into this a little deeper, you'll notice that this is an ingredient you want to avoid like the plague! We are not saying that all man-made chemicals should be avoided; There are definitely some that have positive effects on skin and hair, but silicones are definitely not one of them!
Silicones are a large class of materials - not one item. Silicones in hair products are not water soluble and will build up in your hair and scalp due to their inability to dissolve in water. Since their names are quite difficult to remember, keep in mind that anything ending in “cone”, “conol”, “col” or “xane” should be avoided. (Cetearyl Methicone, Cetyl Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Stearyl Dimethicone, Behenoxy Dimethicone, Stearoxy Dimethicone,…) In hair care, they are mainly used to smooth and add shine. Silicone is actually a sealant. They place a superficial layer on the hair, which prevents other products from penetrating. This gives a temporary, instant shine and smoothness to the hair, which makes us think that the oil or serum containing these products really works. An illusion of course. Indeed, we are all looking for that shiny hair, but long-term use of products containing silicone means that it is difficult for really good ingredients to penetrate the hair shaft. And that is precisely the danger of silicone.
Silicone itself contains nothing nourishing to make your hair shine naturally. They build up in your hair and scalp and cause damage. When you buy a product that contains silicones in the ingredient list (sometimes there are more than one in a product), know that you are paying for a very temporary solution, especially if it is particularly high on the list. This is so annoying when you pay for a seemingly luxurious product.
It is so important to have ingredients that nourish your hair from within and work from within.
Is it really worth paying for chemical products that only coat the hair and do nothing to work from within? Right, I didn't think so.
